So I’m curious- what’s the best technique for making a custom gate like this?

Do you trace the full range of everywhere the shift lever can reach? Or do you try to find the center of each gear throw to guide the shifter to move only in the most precise ways?

I tried to find the centre of each gear, so that when I put it there it stays in place. I’m really only doing this because there’s about 4 inches of play in the shifter back and forth when it’s in gear, and I keep blowing shifts, which isn’t acceptable.

Sounds like a good plan! I like the idea of trying to reduce sloppiness.

There is one “cheat” that I’m fond of, though. Some gates have bars where the tips aren’t rounded in a symmetrical fashion, but have more of an angle to them to help facilitate 2-3 shifts. Is that something you’ll be working into the final cut?

Yeah I tried fixing the sloppiness at the source, but the forks are cast and squeezing them together might break them. I thought about making them asymmetrical, but then I thought what if I needed to shift from 4 down into 2? Might be more difficult. We’ll see! It might be total garbage in the end, I’m no machinist! Haha

I prefer the look of the symmetrical ones, but I imagine that I’d probably prefer the feel of a 2-3 shift that wasn’t so strict with its right angles. I think you’re better off starting with a symmetrical cut, and if you don’t like it, you can remove more material later. Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
